Giving #176146` a spin. It's unmerged, so it appears in the diff.

Findings: if you get invalid xml errors in "intermediate.xml", you've forgot mdDoc.

completely unrelated to this change: it would be cool if we could, at some point in the future, use this for auto-linking options in the html manual. don't think that's feasible even in the current docbook state, but it would be nice to have :)
