If the source GPX is actually invalid could it be possible to give a warning? Or would it be too expensive?

Invalid is a strong word. It doesn't validate the XML schema, but this is quite pedantic on the order of elements. Validating against schemas has indeed some cost, and drivers tend to be lenient
