COGITO 1.0 Roadmap

Hey everyone,

There have been some awesome advancements and feature-adds recently. But with some of my recent life-events I've also realized I need to wind down the time I spend on tinkering with Cogito.

Here is my plan for getting to a Cogito 1.0 release
This is to get this plugin to a solid and feature-rich foundation. The plan is to iron out most of the current bugs and finish the half-finished or not-quite completely implemented features. The state of this official release should offer everyone a good, solid starting point to just use Cogito as is or developing and adding their own new features. At that point, I will probably step back a bit from actively adding features myself, but I'll still be checking PRs, work on docs and offer support as much as I can.

Here's my suggested todo list to get us there, and I'll invite you all to add your thoughts and ideas for this. If there's an item on the list that you'd like to tackle, I'd greatly appreciate a comment saying which one, so we don't double-up and overlap on work.

• Update plugin directory structure (this is already done in the /dev branch, needs to be reviewed merged into /main
• Update/confirm that Cogito Editor tab and it's options work as intended.
• Update plugin to Godot 4.3
• Options menu: Finish implementing rebindable input menu.
• Lobby Demo Scene: Add vending machine to spend currency.
• Laboratory Demo Scene: Remove snap_slot item functionality.
• Wieldables: Improve handling of out-of-ammo state (check inside wieldable script instead of in the PIC)

All future PRs that deal with the issues mentioned above will receive priority for reviewing and merging.
As you can see, it's still a junk of work but doable. My goal would be to get this finished by the end of 2024.
Also, I wanted to thank all contributors for their amazing work on this! Cogito already has so many more features than I ever expected it to have, and it's all because of you.

Posted a PR adding a Currency Check to buttons at #313 so vending machines should be sorted by that. Didn't actually implement any Vending machines with the PR since I wasn't sure if we'd want to convert the ammo buttons into a vending machine or setup a new one, so leaving that part up to you.

I'd also like to try and get damage system rework sorted for 1.0, at least adding positions to the damage would be useful for a bunch of reasons so I'll make an attempt at that.

I can look into putting a basic vending machine in the lobby scene. Design-wise, I was thinking it would have a single cogito button with interact text that states all the relevant transaction information, such as Item name, currency symbol, cost. Upon pressing, it would spawn a battery at a spawn point and charge for the transaction. It could include the option to save an inventory count, so you can't spawn 100 batteries, and indicate when inventory has been depleted.

Am I missing anything and how does this sound @Phazorknight, @niefia?

@OvercastInteractive from what I saw, the CurrencyCheck component should be able to handle all of this except maybe the inventory count.
And yeah, sounds great!

I think we did it!
All major milestones that I wanted to see implemented for 1.0 are now in place. Will still need to do a bit more testing, bugfixing and updating the documentation here and there, then we should be able to do a proper 1.0 release.

Been keeping an eye on this project for awhile! Congrats on reaching this milestone. Anything lurkers like myself can do to help it reach 1.0? Is there specific areas youre looking to see tested?

Thank you! Biggest help for 1.0 would be:

• Reporting any issues of course!
• Feedback for the documentation!

Due to working on Cogito for so long, I know the ins and outs quite well, but making sure everything is explained to users well is it's own challenge. I wanna make sure the documentation provides the help people need when starting out or getting stuck.

Updating on the way to 1.0: I'm gonna try get current PRs #340 and #317 into the current main as soon as possible, then do the release!

Congrats on 1.0! COGITO is such an amazing template and you have worked tirelessly and hard to get us here @Phazorknight !

Now that it can go on the asset store COGITO will really hit the big time! I can't wait to see the projects that come of this
