New Demo Scene for 1.0

Hey everyone,
There's been a lot of improvements and contributions since I first released the beta, and it's gotten a bit awkward in testing/showing these in the current Demo scene.

I've started on designing a new Demo Scene that will be designed to show off more features in a low-poly game-like setting using Kenney's free assets. These are very lightweight, but as always, adding some more assets will increase the overall project filesize a bit (i'm currently estimating around 10mb).

This new Demo Scene will consist of two separate scenes that are connected via multiple connectors (to show how scene connection works). Each will have a different feature focus, so it should still enable developers to quickly test/iterate on features.

I'm also asking for ideas on what you'd like to see set up in those scenes.
Here's what I got planned so far, will check these as I impement them.

Demo Scene A - The Lobby

• Simple Doors
• Drawers/cabinets
• Item Containers
• Locked Doors + Keys
• Keypad
• Documents
• Simple Elevator
• Hidden ducts to crouch through
• Switchable Lights + other switchable objects
• Combinable Items
• Simple Quests
• Wieldable: Flashlight + Batteries

Demo Scene B - The Test Lab

• Hazard Zones: Gain health/lose health
• Consumable Items
• Wieldables: Toy Pistol
• Destructable Targets
• Other destructable objects (probably some kind of crate)
• Wieldable: Some kind of Hitscan weapon as that has been requested. (new)
• Wieldable: Melee weapon - using an Area3D to deal damage. (Pickaxe)

Hi, the new Scene looks nice !
The 'old' one was okay for me, as it was functional, but I get your feeling about that.

• Destructables like these ? https://github.com/Jummit/godot-destruction-plugin This seems to be a pretty "easy" way for destructables as the mesh needs to know to what it has to crumbles down.
  This one has a Box and the Boxshards already done: https://github.com/Mad565/destructible_objects_in_Godot

• As I saw the TV, there could be a powercord that needs to be plugged into the wall first, to show you a keypad-code for a keypadded door, after that, you see the cogito logo as it is right now. I have seen a keypad on that you could directly hit the numbers as interactions: https://github.com/3ddelano/godot-keypad-3d/

• Maybe anywhere in the scene could be a surveillance camera (or similar) that utilizes look_at() if the brightness is high enough, otherwise it would just 'scan' the area from left to right (metal gear style).
  That way we could make use of the brightness scene and we have a bit of stealth, as it was already requested.

• Maybe interaction with an npc / object, like a dialog-box, basicly like the readable paper (or including smth like https://github.com/Rubonnek/dialogue-engine?)

• Maybe (this is the last, I promise) A typical Baketball scene with a Ball and a Hopp, like here: https://godotengine.org/asset-library/asset/195, or Darts maybe, as that would fit better into the room than out of the sudden a wild basketball court appears.

Some Project counts their size without assets, since here it is also for the showcase, I would (for now) not lay focus on projectsize.

Destructables like these

Will take a look at those. Destructables are definitely planned for the Lab area.

I saw the TV, there could be a powercord that needs to be plugged into the wall first.

I might make the TV switchable, but probably won't futz around with trying to get a cable + physics to work. 😅

I've considered it and decided against it for two reasons: a UI Keypad interface is easier and faster to customize, and more importantly: UI keypads are way better to use and navigate with a gamepad. I know there's ways to make these diegetic interfaces gamepad friendly but they're a pain in the butt and I want to keep the template less complex and more user-friendly.
Showing off the keypad is planned and a bit of a challenge on how to get the code is planned.

I have plans for showing off possible stealth mechanics in the Lab area.

Like you state yourself, there's a variety of Dialogue assets out there, so I'm not planning on implementing my own. I'd rather show off how to hook up Cogito to some of the ones out there, and maybe include components to support that. Will look into it but is low priority for now.

I love this Godot asset and it actually helped me quite a bit in how I set up my own interactions. As there's currently no bespoke throw mechanic, I'll have to think about how to implment something like this, but some kind of game like this or the Darts you suggested wouuld be fun.

Just "spitballing" ideas, maybe the CEO's laptop could have some company secrets on it that can be tied to a quest? Maybe even just a code for the archive door? I know there is another way in there already

Maybe we could add functionality, for example into the main menu, to change the map as well? I actually prefer the old map for most of my testing so far, as its size makes it great for quickly running through different functions of the project, albeit it is missing some of the newer items and what not.

Yup, I hear the original demo scene has a lot of fans and adding a button to the main menu to load that one should be pretty easy.

Hey everyone, I wanted to give a small update about the road to 1.0, aka what kind of features and fixes I'd still like to implement before creating a proper release.

• Main menu: Option to delete save files.
• Project setup: Deciding on what Player/Player_HUD/PauseMenu node setup we'll stick with. @ac-arcana would love to hear your input on this with what would make the most sense for you in terms of your multiplayer-fork. I'd then like to stick with this.
• Project setup: A bit of a cleanup to the directory structure and some more consistent name_spacing.
• Feature: A "flag" system for more systemic behaviours, ideally based on components. I want to show how this would work with making the barrel explode when it dies, causing AoE damage, but also making it not take damage by foam darts or foam bullets, thus showing how different damage types can be made with this system.
• Feature: A very basic security camera that can detect the player based on visibility (with a "detection" threshold time that is dependent on it)
• Improved / updated documentation

Stuff that I don't need to happen before the 1.0:

• Additional graphic or gameplay settings.
• Rebindable inputs.

#179 (comment) will likely resolve my issue with the setup.
I've reflected on the challenge I've had where I need to delete the menu and inject my own, and I really don't think the average dev is going to encounter this issue, so I don't think its even worth a lot of energy to change it.
It's my decision that I wanted to be able to load in any demo scene already available as MP that created that challenge for me. Building a scene from scratch would not have the same issue.

About this. Is the intent for all gd script files to be named with snake case? Currently I see a mix of snake_case and pascal case for gd script names.

I was really used to Pascalcase, but official Godot style guides mention that script file names should be snake case, so I'll convert it to that.

I was really used to PascalCase from C# myself. It must be a Unity convert thing lol. Anyway I can work on renaming some too and help with documentation a bit here and there. These things I bring up are not such a big deal. Functionality, stability, and usability are more important.
