Main Start Screen

Purpose

The main screen will have to be redesigned from the box boy title card to reflect the game that we have created. After the intro screens, the start screen will be the player's starting point to the game, so it's important that the screen matches the game.

Draft sketches

The design process started off with various possible sketches of title screens. One possibility was to use an older asset, the space background, and have the main astronaut character floating around in space, among the various planets. This is a clear visual representation of the game's setting. The player will instantly know that they'll be in space. The title is written in runic font. This will allude to the viking and nordic elements within the game. The various other runes and symbols scattered around the background will also add to that impression.

The second sketch is more focused on the space element, with plans of the background being a circuit board and the title being in a metallic colour, but still be based on runes. The astronaut would also make an appearance under the title.

Both of the screens include the title of the new game, which is meteor man.

Finalised versions

The first screen is the recreation of sketch 1. The astronaut is floating through space with various different planets and runes surrounding them. The font is Noto Sans Runic, to represent the norse influence.

The second screen is more story-focused. This depicts the astronaut looking out of a spaceship window, with various meteors shown. This represents the end of the story, where the player will reach the spaceship and fly away. The circuit board idea was modified as in hindsight, it didn't seem as relevant and related to the concept of the game. The title is positioned at the top in Unibody 8 Pro font.

Both screens were created in Illustrator and employs the minimalist 2D style present throughout the game and the colour palette set for the game's design guide.
