Installation Instructions
This page describes how to install and configure the Denon/Marantz AVR Control plugin for the Lyrion Music Server.
This plugin assumes that each of the players you want to use with it is connected to a Denon or Marantz AVR via a connection to one of the AVR's inputs, and you have confirmed that audio can be heard from the player through the AVR to your speakers.
To configure the AVR to work with the plugin you must:
- Set a fixed IP Address for the AVR in your network
- Turn 'Standby Mode Power Saving' to OFF
- Have your AVR in Standby mode and not Off
To install the plugin, check the box for Denon/Marantz AVR Control in the server plugin list, then Apply.
- Note: You will have to restart the Lyrion server to activate the plugin, which you should be prompted to do.
To remove the plugin from the server, uncheck the Denon/Marantz AVR Control plugin from the list of plugins and restart the server.
See the Lyrion Music Server website for more information on how to install plugins.
The Denon/Marantz AVR Control plugin is completely configured from the Lyrion Music Server Web GUI. There is nothing to be done on the player itself. All the settings are performed via the server web application.
Once the plugin is installed and the Lyrion Music Server has been restarted, you can configure the plugin for each of your players. Note that you can have as many instances of the plugin as you have players. The settings and control of each instance are specific to a particular player. It is strongly suggested that you do not have more than one Lyrion player control a given AVR zone. You could, however, have multiple Denon/Marantz amplifiers/zones in your system, each controlled separately by a different player and corresponding Denon/Marantz AVR Control plugin instance. Also, beginning with v4.7 of the plugin, all zones of an AVR can be individually controlled and fed by one player via the Denon/Marantz AVR Settings menu of the client app. The AVR Settings menu options, aside from the power toggle, zone select, preamp and channel levels, quick select and input select controls, are only valid for the Main zone of the AVR.
To configure the plugin:
- Restart the Lyrion Music Server after you have installed the plugin
- Access the Lyrion Music Server Settings Web GUI
- Choose the Player tab and the player you wish to configure
- Select the 'Denon/Marantz AVR Control' menu tab
You can toggle the use of the plugin on/off without having to remove it from the server. Check the box and the plugin will be enabled for the player.
Use this dropdown to indicate which type of AVP/AVR is being controlled by this player. Some of the telnet and menu commands differ depending on the make and model, and you may lose certain features if you select this inappropriately. The default is "Denon AVR".
You must enter the IP address (less the "http://") of your AVR (for example 127.0.0.1). Note: for this plugin to work you will need to have a fixed IP address set for your AVR. You will also need to configure the AVR networking to turn off Power Saver mode in the network settings. Failure to do either of these will result in the plugin not being able to communicate with your AVR. See the Denon/Marantz owners manual for instructions on making these settings.
Note: Beginning with v4.4.1, an optional port number can also be specified as part of the AVR's IP address, e.g. "127.0.0.1:pppp". If not specified, the port defaults to "23", the standard Telnet port. This feature is meant to allow the use of a serial-to-network bridge with older AVR's having only a serial port. In that case, the port number configured in the bridge would be specified, with the traffic being forwarded to the AVR's serial port.
Select from the pulldown which Quick/Smart Select option or Input Source you would like to invoke when turning on the player. Selecting AVR Input Source displays an additional text field to enter the "friendly" name of the input source as defined in the AVR. Note you must have preconfigured your AVR for the selected Quick Select (Denon), Smart Select (Marantz) or Input Source for this to be effective. For the Marantz MODEL M1 and Denon Home Amp streaming amplifiers, only the Input Source can be specified, and must be one of 'Digital', 'Line' or 'HDMI'. Input Source names are case sensitive. After a minimum of three seconds from a Power On command the plugin will request the AVR to select the specfied Quick/Smart Select or Input Source, if configured. This option is available for all AVR zones.
Select the primary AVR zone you wish the plugin to control. You may choose between Main, Zone 2, Zone 3, and Zone 4, depending on your AVR's capabilities. The plugin will default to Main. With the Multi-zone feature introduced in v4.7, zones other than the primary one can also be controlled by using the plugin's AVR Settings client menu.
Select this option if you would like to only power the AVR on when playback is started. This option is useful for SB hardware players that turn on automatically when plugged in, especially after a power outage. The default is "No".
Enter the number of seconds that you want the plugin to wait after powering on the AVR before invoking the Quick Select or Input Source selection. The default is three seconds.
Enter the maximum volume you want the plugin to adjust the AVR to when making volume adjustments. 100% volume at the Lyrion player will be limited to this value on the AVR. It is suggested that you limit the volume to no more than 70 (-10dB). Volume adjustments to the player will vary from 0 (-80dB) on the AVR to whatever maximum setting you have chosen here. What is displayed for the player's volume (0-100) will represent an approximate percentage of this value (subject to a slightly non-linear algorithm). For example if you set the Maximum Volume of AVR to 80 (0dB), a volume of 50 for the player volume would result in the AVR being set to about 40 (-40dB).
If you want to poll the AVR's power status at regular intervals to keep the player and AVR synchronized, check this box and enter the desired polling interval in the next menu setting.
Enter the polling interval in seconds for power synchronization. The valid range is 5 to 60 seconds, with a default of 60.
If you want to synchronize the player's volume to the AVR volume at each track change, and optionally at regular intervals, enable this checkbox. This will cause volume changes on the AVR to change the player's volume indicator. Note: This option requires power syncing to be enabled.
Enter the polling interval in seconds for volume synchronization. The valid range is 0 (sync only at track changes) to 30 seconds, with a default of 0.
Note that when the player is first started, after about 5 seconds the plugin will match the Squeezebox volume to reflect what is currently set on the AVR. The AVR will not have its volume changed until you adjust it via the player controls. It is suggested that you set the Volume Control option of the player's Audio Settings to Output level is fixed at 100%. This will cause all LMS volume changes to be made directly to the AVR, preventing the player from altering the audio signal in its firmware/software and resulting in a purer ("bit perfect") digital signal to the AVR.
-
Note: If you choose not to set your player to output 100% volume or you are connecting your player to the AVR via the analog outputs, this plugin will not send any volume changes to the AVR. Volume will be controlled by the Lyrion player itself and result in an attenuated signal being sent to the AVR. It will be up to you to set a reasonable volume on your amplifier to match the desired maximum output of your player. This value can be set initially via the AVR's Quick Select definition and subsequently modified using the Preamp Volume menu in the client plugin menu or using the AVR's remote.
-
Note: The plugin checks the status of the 100% Volume setting during the power on process and is also notified when the status is changed via LMS. It is advised that you make any change to this setting with the player at a low volume level in order to ensure you don't over-drive your speakers.
-
Note: If you are using the Android app Squeeze Ctrl to control the player, DO NOT USE the 100% volume feature unless you make a change to it's settings. YOU CAN DAMAGE YOUR SPEAKERS. Go to "Preferences->Controls->Fixed Volume Send Command" to set the client for 100% volume processing.
-
Note: If you are using the Material Skin client, you must make this change to support 100% volume processing: Settings->Server->Material Skin->Fixed volume players => 'Display standard volume control'.
If you wish to be able to change various AVR audio settings such as power, zone, input source, quick select, surround mode, room equalizer, dynamic equalizer, restorer, dynamic volume, and channel volume on the AVR during playback, select this checkbox. An additional "Denon/Marantz AVR Settings" menu will appear in the player menu (iPeng), the Settings menu (Squeezer), or the Player settings menu (Material Skin). NOTE: This option is not available for Marantz MODEL M1 and Denon Home Amp devices.
If you wish to be able to separately control the power and volume of multiple zones of the AVR by switching between them from the AVR Settings menu, select this option. Note that this checkbox is only available when the Enable audio settings menus? option is selected.
This setting is used by the client plugin AVR Settings menu to determine which channels to display in the Channel Level Adjustment submenu. Select the speaker configuration corresponding most closely to that of the AVR zone being controlled by the player. Use the default of 3.1 for systems that do not include surround speakers. Otherwise, choose the appropriate option from the list.
- Note: All players controlling secondary AVR zones will ignore this setting and default to stereo mode.
