GOA management area biomass #36
Comments
Hi Ben, good idea. We can simply designate the subareas by the strata.limits argument in VAST. It would be great to work with you to make the appropriate inputs for each species and compare the allocation differences resulting from design- and model-based estimators. |
Good morning. This does sound like a good idea and it sounds like Lewis might have a good understanding of how to approach answering this question. I'm bringing @coleary-noaa into the loop here as the Gulf-Aleutian Team Lead on our VAST modeling efforts. |
A student that Paul Spencer and I worked with, Kelly Mistry, has done this comparison (building off of Curry's work) between the RE model and VAST allocation: https://github.com/krmistry/fish_in_space . Let me know if you can't see that repo. She's currently working on internal review edits to the manuscript. We can work with assessment authors for specific species, like we have in other species (e.g., GOA pollock), about management regions they'd like to see. |
Thanks Cecilia.
Should I close this issue or will you continue working in it?

Leave this issue open for now and assessment authors can request specific species that they would like this additional output & regions created. Thanks, Nancy! I will close it if we move the conversation over to our ModSquad group. |
Thanks Cecilia and will do.

Data product requested: Current VAST estimates produce biomass for the entire GOA. However, allocation is based upon spatial abundance (e.g., western, central, eastern - some species have additional spatial allocations). While a number of GOA species are using VAST to estimate survey abundance we then switch to the design-based abundance estimate to determine regional abundance (which is then run through a random effects model) to determine allocation.
It would be helpful if area abundance was also an output from the GAP group, additionally it would be helpful to examine what, if any differences, changing to VAST generated are abundance would have on allocation. This can be accomplished through collaboration with assessment authors. I'm happy to assist with this once assessment season has passed.
Species: Any using VAST estimates for the GOA
Region GOA
