It would be nice, however… I don't think it is a viable option for these two reasons:

1. @conatus was very keen to have it here to make it visible. (However perhaps this isn't so important? The fact that we have loads of outstanding issues that never seem to get resolved doesn't make it look like such a showcase project does it? For example I raised the issue regarding the fact that the map doesn't display correctly on any page on the public site apart from the front page, Map display on Services and Technology Pages #92 and nothing has happened or looks likely to happen to resolve it. I know everybody is busy but still…)

2. Only two, or perhaps three, of the 30 CoTech co-ops are members of Webarchitects. (There is a huge amount of resistance to the idea of having to join a co-op in order to access git.coop, see this thread for the background. I think this is a manifestation of the general view, of most people in CoTech, that is is preferable and better to use "free" services provided by global capitalist corporations rather than paying for services provided by co-operatives running Free software?)

As long as it's not going to negatively impact anyone that's currently contributing to the site (i.e. those people will still be able to contribute with minimal disruption), and if you're happy to support it once it's moved then I reckon you should feel free to move it.

Hi all.

My basic argument was that one of the purposes of CoTech should be outreach to existing technical workers - among whom there are coders, but I'd say GitHub is a key artifact now for other professionals - and convince them that being part of cooperatives would be a good thing to do and be involved with. Which meant having a footprint on GitHub was useful: the first thing I do when I hear about a company or organisation is check their GitHub. Its a way I assess what they are up to and if they are interesting technically or otherwise. You can also follow a link from someone's GitHub profile to the CoTech organisation they are part of and then be "oh cool there is this CoTech thing". I do this quite a bit where I find out about interesting projects or organisations via people's profile on GitHub.

I still think this is a good argument. But as I don't currently work for a cooperative, so my opinion on this doesn't seem especially relevant.

On your broader point 2. @chriscroome this seems a significant bugbear for you viz the general direction of CoTech, so I would suggest you raise this in whatever forum is appropriate for this concern.

I've made a proposal for us to join @chriscroome - sorry it's taken so long!

The site could do with some proper TLC - it was just hacked together quickly from whatever was lying around. Just need to find some time and/or money.

I think it's a good idea to move off GitHub. I think that was the general sentiment on Loomio too, rather than resistance. :-)

Here's what I'll do.

I'll set up a mirror here and people can contribute if they want and we'll make sure those changes are getting merged to git.coop automatically. I'll do a Gitlab import to git.coop and I'll add documentation about getting into webarchs for write access and all that.

Who has access to the deployment server? I'll ping here when this is all done and you can switch the remote over?

wow jeez. They normally buy shit products and make them worse - I once spent 40 minutes trying to make a call on Skype and only managed by googling "how do I make a phones on Skype using the Android app" which was embarrassing for a UX consultant. More embarrassing for Microsoft was that I had to follow instructions to "open your phonebook app", "write down the number you want to call", "reopen Skype", etc. Git.coop - your time has come
