Right now the Design quality review group is empty. We need it to have people, as we are facing several designs coming down the pike.

My proposal

To match prior practice, I propose that we initialize the group to the set of people with formal design training who DRI’ed design efforts in the past. Formally, this means that I nominate @mbernst, @karolina, @christopher.diemert, and @varis. If I am missing somebody, please let me know! (By the way @markwhiting, my reading on the gov docs is that someone can self-nominate for a position: "To gain these privileges, the person must be nominated by a member of the Collective". Do we want to allow self nomination, like I'm doing here?)

Nomination paragraphs:

@mbernst has led multiple design efforts and design reviews on the site over the past few years. This includes multiple design review passes with @dmorina on the task feed, authoring page, results review, and homepage.

@karolina crafted the overall design language of the site, including final color scheme, and several graphics for the papers and the site.

@christopher.diemert was very active early on designing elements such as (IIRC) the logo, task feed, early color schemes, and aspects of the homepage.

@varis led a redesign of the authoring environment and review page.

I think self nomination is not a problem. The decision making method is not compromised by that.

Thanks @mbernst.

Could you clarify what are the things fit under the design umbrella--- are you referring to information design, visual design, mockup creation, mockup design, frontend coding, logo creation, graphic design, UI and workflow design, color schema selection?

I nominate @karolina @mbernst @varis. In addition to these names, I would also like to nominate following people who have contributed till date in various phases of design---

Nominations

  • Alipta (Poster for CSCW, Logo, Figures, Task Review Mockup)
  • Durim (Material UI design, User profile page, Front end coding)
  • Paritosh (Contributors page design, Design credentials)
  • Shirish (Material UI design, Task Authoring Interface, Homepage and Demo pages along with Varis, Animated video for UIST paper, Front end coding)
  • Neil (Initial design of the platform using Bootstrap, DRI for several design milestones, Front end coding, Conference posters and paper figures with Karolina, Alipta, HCI training at CMU and MIT, etc )

Just to update @varis not just worked on redesign of the authoring environment and review page, but he pretty much designed all pages which exist right now on the platform including homepage, demo pages, requester and worker interfaces.

Good question @neilthemathguy. I do not think that "frontend coding" should be reviewed by the design QR, as the group is not designed to be coding experts. However, the design QR group should be reviewing frontend code insofar as it produces changes to the design.

I would suggest that the group's jurisdiction include changes that involve changes to the visual design, information design, or interaction design of the platform. This specifically would include UIs, mockups, the design language (e.g., colors, fonts, logo, grid), layout. I'm open to others.

@mbernst @neilthemathguy if you want less disagreement/friction between "teams" then you probably want to select real graphic designers rather than designer wannabe's or people who know some bits of design (like most of the list of Neil and partially Michael's) and this applies to every group/team

My suggestion would be to include people either who hold/are pursuing a graphic design degree [insert applicable degree here] or have professional experience which qualifies them for this.

@qwertyone According to the governance documents, a nomination has to be made during each week's proposal window, then the vote runs during the next week's proposal window. So, the current votes are only open for people who were nominated during the past week's cycle. If you'd like to nominate Angela, please make a separate "issue" (proposal) with the nomination and explanatory paragraph (like #22), and the vote will open following this week's proposal cycle. Thanks!

The new members of the Design QR team are now recorded in Suggestion Mode in the Operational Group Membership GDoc. This proposal is now ready for quality review ("an ad-hoc team of at least three people is formed from volunteers").

@mbernst just noticed the link in your previous comment was to this page, not to the intended page.

Here's the Operational Group Membership GDoc.
