Should we eat meat? #50
Comments
Ines has also experimented with this for periods of up to 6 months and in a very un-scientific experiment, felt no different energy-wise. However, she was also young and paid no attention to the balancing of nutrients, probably compromising her immune system in the process. I've found that for me, the ideal combination is mostly vegetarian with a small number of meat-based (preferably fish) meals. Lots of research to be re-read and documented though. |
I wanted to chip in my current "experiment". As an IBS sufferer, I've spent a few years now trying to figure out what makes it worse and strangely enough, veg/fruit and cheese. As in too much of these things. After 7 and a half years of being a vegetarian, I recently have added a little meat back into my diet to see if this helps improve my IBS as I'll be cutting down the amount of fruit/veg and cheese overall as I'll be replacing some of the amounts in my diet with meat. I can't really report too much yet as I only started this on Xmas day. But I will keep you posted as I think this might be useful for you guys. |
Impressive collection of articles on Veganism: https://sunaku.github.io/vegan-for-life.html |
As a follow up, I now do eat meat and my IBS is like 10000000 times better. I'm not saying it would be better for all, depends on what makes your IBS worse and how much you can plan to avoid those foods without meat as a substitute. However, it always made eating out at a restaurant almost impossible for me to truly enjoy. |
I've listened to a lot of podcasts over the last 36 hours and enjoy Gimlet Media's Science Vspodcast (even if I'm not interested in all the subjects, it's always educational). I find it well researched and usually unbiased - if anything it's biased towards healthy scepticism. In September there was an episode on veganism: https://www.gimletmedia.com/science-vs/vegans-are-they-right#episode-player Spoiler alert ahead! There is a lot of refreshing pragmatism in this episode. 140 citations in this episode. The main points here were:

I'm quite disappointed by this compilation by Tom Bilyeu: Read: https://medium.com/@Kahn642/10-important-plant-diet-vegan-research-studies-of-2018-15841245cdb7 |
Last night at dinner Ines re-stated her position by saying:
"I have no intention of giving up eating meat altogether"
But is there evidence that eating meat is bad for humans...?
I for one have experimented with long periods of abstaining from eating meat and have consistently felt better (more energy) in those periods...
But what is the research?
