A man (Cary Grant) pretends to be married while romancing an actress (Ingrid Bergman) in London.

Okay, here's the thing: there's not much to _Indiscreet_, but I love it anyway. If ever there was a movie that worked purely on the charisma of its two leads, _Indiscreet_ is it.

Director Stanley Donen wisely gives as much screen time as possible to his stars, indeed there's hardly a moment one of them isn't on screen, and that's why this breezy movie works. The artful sets, designer costumes, and charismatic leads simply hypnotize you for 100 minutes and before you know it, the end credits are rolling and you've got a smile on your face.

The movie is relentlessly charming. From the nervous jitters of Grant and Bergman’s characters' first date, to Grant’s memorable closing line, this is a hard film to hate. Sure, it’s all fluff, but the film never pretends to be anything more, and there’s a certain satisfaction in seeing a simple story perfectly told.

In San Francisco, a health inspector (Donald Sutherland) discovers a horrific alien plan to take over the planet.

Philip Kaufman’s remake of <span data-imdb-id="tt0049366">_Invasion of the Body Snatchers_</span> is a well-produced and well-acted horror film. In many ways, it’s like a zombie film with less gore and makeup. Like George Romero’s classic <span data-imdb-id="tt0063350">_Night of the Living Dead_</span>, Kaufman amps up the claustrophobic atmosphere while at the same time using the genre to explore socio-political issues.

Donald Sutherland is perfect in the lead, playing a believable everyman forced to deal with an unimaginable horror. Equally well cast is Leonard Nimoy, playing the suave psychologist determined to explain everything away.

The script by W.D. Richter does a great job of efficiently painting believable characters, while avoiding most celluloid clichés. Its only real flaw comes toward the end, when it seems to run out of story and devolves into an extended chase scene. Fortunately, the film redeems itself with a knockout closing shot that will haunt you.

During the second Sino-Japanese war, a martial arts master trains the workers of a cotton factory to fend off bandits, and battles a Japanese general in a martial arts duel.

Let's just get this out of the way: Ip Man has some _great_ martial arts sequences and if you're a fan of the genre, it's pretty much a must-see.

That said, take away the fight sequences, and you have a nationalistic propaganda piece very reminiscent of the US war pictures of the 1940s. From the blood-covered sack of rice, to the half-eaten potato that Ip Man saves for his family, the filmmakers do everything possible to overtly manipulate the audience's emotions.

The Japanese are portrayed as a group of slimy, sociopathic monsters and the fictionalized Ip Man (some synopsis will read that _Ip Man_ is a biography of the grandmaster of Wing Chun who famously taught Bruce Lee, but this character is almost pure fiction) is treated as a mythical figure, whose dual against a Japanese general single-handedly brings about the end of the Sino-Japanese war.

For a genre piece this is fine, but _Ip Man_ could be so much more. The real Ip Man's life seems so much more interesting than what's on the screen, and the production values, along with star Donnie Yen's charisma are certainly up to the task of a _real_ biography that could have transcended the martial arts genre to deliver a picture with genuine emotion instead of the manufactured melodrama we're given.

A life-threatening injury inspires a wealthy industrialist (Robert Downey Jr.) to build a hi-tech suit of armor, which he uses to fight evil.

_Iron Man_ is possibly the best comic-book adaptation made to date. Highlighted by a tour-de-force performance from Robert Downey Jr., the film works from the opening frames and, a few missteps aside, is nearly perfect.

Downey Jr. makes the movie. As Tony Stark, he manages to nail the character’s egotistical, self-destructive behaviors while simultaneously providing an undeniably charismatic protagonist the audience can root for. Not an easy task, but Downey Jr. makes it look easy, and in doing so pretty much carries the film.

Supporting Downey Jr. is a solid cast, though most fail to register opposite his showy performance. Terrence Howard plays a military liaison whose best moment comes as a nod to fans of the original comic books, and Jeff Bridges plays something of a one-dimensional but nonetheless charismatic villain. Best of all is Gwyneth Paltrow, who imbues a genuine charm to her role as Stark’s secretary.

The script wisely avoids some of the more fantastic elements of the Iron Man mythos (though there are nods, such as naming a terrorist cell “The Ten Rings”) and, instead grounds itself in a more plausible reality than most of its comic book adaptation contemporaries, while simultaneously retaining the style and fun of the source material. It’s a tricky balance, but one that _Iron Man_’s four screenwriters manage to pull off.

Granted, the film does have its slips. There are a few continuity issues regarding Downey Jr.’s appearance that are too obvious not to notice, which is surprising given the rest of the film’s polish. These aren’t deal breakers, but enough to distract you slightly from what is otherwise a great film.

A hood (Humphrey Bogart) on the run from the law hides out at a boarding house, which he soon converts into a nightclub.

_It All Came True_ is an entertaining comedy that works thanks to great performances from Ann Sheridan and Humphrey Bogart.

Sheridan, who has top billing, shines in a charismatic performance that never feels too broad or over-the-top. She's feisty, but levelheaded, and easy to root for. While there isn't a whole lot of chemistry between her and her love-interest, second-billed Jeffrey Lynn, she still works. Indeed, if it'd been, say, William Holden, instead of Lynn as her love-interest, the film could have really clicked.

Thankfully, Humphrey Bogart's there to save the day. He plays the same tough-guy gangster role he'd been playing at Warner Brothers for years, and it pays off. By playing the part straight, he brings just the right comedic touch to the role as a hard-boiled mobster who's totally out of his element when confronted with the kindly matrons who run the boarding house.

At 97 minutes, the film does run a bit long. Some of the Sheridan-Lynn scenes could be trimmed as the spark between them just isn't there, but for the most part this is a pretty lean film that manages to straddle both the gangster and comedy genres. That's no small feat, and why _It All Came True_ is worth a look from fans of Bogart, Sheridan, or Warner Brother's gangster genre.
