Fixes #1544
First it captures the check API key and adds to the error message.
Then it fixes an issue that missed picking up the message and always returned "An unexpected error occurred"
Finally, it communicates the result with the user and logs the issue as well. I put in the stack and not sure if that is something that you want to do.
