The CHT has existing capabilities to support the building of direct-to-household workflows for patient care. These workflows will be further explored and made easier for developers to include in CHT apps, and shared more broadly with the CHT community.

One way to encourage use would be by including the following workflows in the reference app:

  • Requests for help by messaging a central number, which can result in support via automated chat, live chat, or voice follow-up calls by a nurse or their assigned CHW. Using the channels prebuilt in RapidPro the messaging can be done via SMS, USSD, Telegram, WhatsApp.
  • Escalation of self-care to assigned CHW, a nurse, or immediate referral. Escalated workflows can result in Tasks in CHT apps for CHWs or other health workers.
  • Active case finding by messaging households with survey questions about the health of family members.

In addition to building reference apps, this process could discover opportunities with users, app developers, and partners to make sure that patient workflows are an effective part of community health systems. The result may also include guides or tutorials on the doc site which can be shared in the Forum and during the CHT Roundup calls.
