Create a dummy acc in incognito mode and use it to register for the API key, instructions in the conf doc. Once you've done that you can download so much without having to worry much at all about the delays that you probly can DL extremely massive galleries before they start caring.

This is probably not "good internet citizen" behavior, but it's obviously the "correct" answer to my question. ;-)

not "good internet citizen" behavior ? The point and use of a dummy acc ain't to fool DA (there ain't much point in fooling them to begin with cuz you're not abusing the site, and unless you use a VPN you'll still have the same IP which connects your accs), but to prolong the usability of exported cookies if you choose to download someone's scraps (cookies expire faster if you use them in both a browser and softwares such as gallery-dl), which sadly requires the use of cookies since the API doesn't have support for them. Not yet, anyways.
