Use of per-user GC roots has been generally deprecated in Nix, and Lorri's use of them has been causing problems on new installs. Using `nix-store --realise --add-root` delegates the root creation to the nix-daemon and eliminates the need for us to manage filesystem permissions or provide workarounds for users.
We don't need to create the per-user GC root directory any more.

This is the complete fix to #97 (and probably several other crash reports)
