Fixes the issue highlighted in https://github.com/casey/ord/issues/1893.
I tested this simultaneously with https://github.com/casey/ord/pull/1959 and was able to gain a substantial increase in performance, at least for the initial sync process. Getting to the progress reported in the screenshot took ~6 minutes
