Remove redundant functions from libraries #2868
Comments
Sometimes it's convenient to have a function so you can write |
Ongoing cleanup, not critical for 0.6. De-milestoning |
Nominated for backwards compatibility. Unified Method Syntax will allow a lot of this to be fixed. |
I think we all agree that these should be removed and methods be made callable as functions instead, so I'm removing the RFC tag. |
accepted for backwards-compatible milestone |
This has progressed: However, it's definitely not finished. |
I think it's safe to say that this is pretty much done at this point. There's pressure against this all on all new PRs, the stdlib is in good shape with respect to these freestanding functions, and it's been quite awhile since I've used a freestanding function myself. There may still be remaining issues, but I think they can be addressed on a case-by-case basis, the reach of this bug has diminished by a fair amount. |
…anishearth Warn on structs with a trailing zero-sized array but no `repr` attribute Closes rust-lang#2868 changelog: Implement ``[`trailing_empty_array`]``, which warns if a struct is defined where the last field is a zero-sized array but there are no `repr` attributes. Zero-sized arrays aren't very useful in Rust itself, so such a struct is likely being created to pass to C code or in some other situation where control over memory layout matters. Either way, a `repr` attribute is needed.
Update Rust toolchain from nightly-2023-11-08 to nightly-2023-11-09 without any other source changes. This is an automatically generated pull request. If any of the CI checks fail, manual intervention is required. In such a case, review the changes at https://github.com/rust-lang/rust from rust-lang@7adc89b up to rust-lang@fdaaaf9. Methods in the libraries are mostly implemented as wrappers for standalone functions. This wasn't really an intentional design decision, but just an easy way to start using methods. We should keep the methods and get rid of the functions. Methods are more convenient for multiple reasons.
