Some of my favorite typography resources. The absolute best are bold.
- Typographer’s Glossary
- Games
- Shape Type, a letter shaping game
- Kern Type, a kerning game
- Butterick’s Practical Typography is probably the best thing on this list—I find myself referring to it more than I’d care to admit.
- Ask H&FJ: Four Ways to Mix Fonts
- Erik Spiekermann’s Typo Tips – Erik Spiekermann is more or less a legend in the type world.
- Hack Design: Dive Into Typography
- So You Want to Create a Font
- A user over at Typophile compiled this guide to creating fonts.
- Stephen Coles posted this great response on Quora.
- Glyphs Mini is my tool of choice for tinkering with type design.
- Future Fonts is a new, clever site. Designers upload in-progress typefaces, which can be purchased on the cheap. As they work on them, updates are made available and the price increases. It's a great way to support designers and get some funky, wonderful letters for the low.
- I Love Typography posts interesting, historically-oriented pieces.
- Favorite Foundries
- Klim Type Foundry is particularly great at display faces. My favorites are Tiempos, Pitch, and Founders Grotesk.
- Colophon Foundry has a distinct and offbeat style. Aperçu is basically everywhere on the web nowadays.
- Schick Toikka
- Good Type Foundry
- Dinamo
- Lineto
- Fount is a bookmarklet I use all the time for identifying webfonts.
- Type Sample is a site I've just started using to collect webfonts I like.
- Type Detail is a cool side project looking at the unique features of various typefaces.
- Just My Type is a fun, easy read.
- Designing Type is one of the best resources for making a typeface, letter by letter.
- An Alphabetical Book About Nokia Pure is a beautiful deep-dive into the creation of Nokia’s own typeface.
