Translation to pt_BR

Hello!

Is there any parallel translation project for this book? Have others asked permission to translate?

Could I start a translation into Portuguese (Brazil)?

Thanks for your interest! I don't know of any parallel translations of the book. @bwittman and I have been discussing an upgrade to the code examples--using a newer version of Java and a more modern graphics library--but we do not have a timeframe. I'll let him chime in--if we're going to do the upgrade this summer, for example, it would affect your translation.

It will be a pleasure to do the translation (it will be an effort too), but if the plan is to "just" update the code samples and modern libraries, I don't think it will be that difficult to adjust when the new version is released. And I will work on using the same material to teach classes on concurrent programming and distributed systems.

So if there is no problem, I will start the translation and also use github.io to release the material.

I talked to Barry and we're in agreement that a Portugese version would be great. So, please have at it! Be aware, though, that the changes to code and libraries will require changes to the text, so it will affect your translation. I don't think we'll begin our updates until June.

I will be happy to work with you as needed. Have you tried building the book yet on your own? There are some quirks and dependencies in the build process and the README file may need clarifications. Let me know if you have questions (or file issues, if appropriate).

First of all, sorry for almost 2 month delay, I have some personal issue, and other thing in school. Plus, in my Windows, I tried with WSL Ubuntu and Ruby doesn't work so well. But in my notebook with Arch Linux, flowed like a flight. So sweet. And I have some results, not long localization to pt_BR, but just to used to how to work with files and where to make changes.

Thanks for your efforts on this project! It would be helpful to include your name and a brief biosketch in the translated version. Also, I notice that Google Translate (e.g., in Chrome) translates "Start Concurrent" to "Starting Competitor". I realize there are issues of jargon and technical language--I wonder if it is possible to "educate" Google Translate to give a better (reverse) translation? Tim

Yeah, I was thinking about this. I'll provide a mini bio about me, but first I trying to solve one thing, the Chapter and Section translation. I figure it out that autoxref-treeprocessor have some of this captions, but none of my try worked. Could you help me on this? I've already try to put :chapter-caption: on .adoc files, won't work too.

Well, the Google Translate is an issue.. I tried some changes in the source to reflect the same terms in the original, but I think that the change need to be made on Translate, and I have no idea how to make this now, maybe later, but what the point to make the reverse? The translation (I use to call Localization (L10n)) won't be exactly the same, some terms, will be adapted to Brazilian Portuguese, and "harmonized" to better understanding.

And, I started to translate first the chapter 13, where the Concurrent programming is the principal subject. As I aim to use the book in class, this is where I begin to address the topic.

I don't know what the issue is. I looked at your translation, including Chapter 13, but don't see what the problem is. Can you explain what is wrong?

Hi professor,

If you look at Chapter 13, in the translation, at Section 13.3 you could see Chapter 14, which in Portuguese should be Capítulo 14. As in Example, is Exemplo (in Portuguese), and Exercise, is Exercício, Figure as Figura, Images as Imagens, this captions have xref, and this appears to be changed in autoxref-treeprocessor.rb file, but this isn't working. And the same occours with Section, which in my translation should be Seção. I think this have something with autoxref or xref lib, but won't find anything about.

The autoxref tree processing code handles numbering and cross references. It appears that localization happens after tree processing, so that specifying attributes in the header files (e.g., index.doc) seems to work: :chapter-signifier: Capítulo :chapter-refsig: Capítulo See Asciidoctor Docs: Localization and numbering attributes <https://docs.asciidoctor.org/asciidoc/latest/attributes/document-attributes-ref/#builtin-attributes-i18n> for more attributes. Thanks, I was looking in another direction, saw some examples in other doc book made with Asciidoc in Portuguese and they used :chapter-caption: Capítulo.. but signifier and refsig worked here.
Now, the next chapter, 14 is already being translation.

Hope all is well with you. We are on summer break here, so have begun working in earnest on our planned book changes. We've decided to change the name-- to Attacking Problems with Java--which pushes us to change the repository. The new repo is attacking-java/attacking-java.github.io.

There will be a new chapter or two, including topics like lambdas, closures, functional interfaces, and (possibly) streams. We're also adding a number of new Java language constructs that have appeared over time: var keyword, switch statement improvements, interface updates, records and enums, instanceof bindings, type inference, try-with-resources, and Path (deprecating File).

Because we're adding one or more new chapters, we've dropped the convention of naming chapter files with their chapter numbers. So, for example, ch01-computer-basics.adoc is now computer-basics.adoc.

It would probably work out best for your translation efforts to fork the attacking-problems repo, apply your current changes to it (using git diff to find our changes), then continue the translation from there. I hope these updates won't cause you too many problems--and you'll find them worthwhile improvements to the textbook!

Hi Tim! Everything is fine here, now we are on winter break here too. And I'm taking the opportunity to review some studies (including Java) and I'll continue translating the book! I have already cloned the new repository, and I will apply the changes from the old one to the new one and continue from there. I will follow the changes in the new repository and now start the translation from chapter 1, since what I was most urgent about, which were the chapters on competition themselves, have already been translated.
