[bug] dependencies in example app do not update with dependabot

Describe the bug
Dependabot does not update our example app. We don't run the example app often and there aren't eyes on this.

To Reproduce
See #335 where we manually upgraded several dependencies after getting alerts about lodash.

Expected behavior
Regular dependabot PRs also upgrade dependencies in the example app.

Additional context
Dependabot config can be adjusted to have settings for multiple directories. This is handled similarly to having dependabot run on multiple languages or package managers.

Right now we are also getting set up properly with the new GH version of dependabot (see #334). We may have to wait a cycle or two to implement.
