I alleviated this issue by discovering a setting "TreeEditor.Rank.Threshold.Taxon" in Specify7. Setting this to value "60" (class) takes away a most of the timeouts, though not completely. Will experiment with this as global setting and also try to take a closer look at the database.

When I tried this morning, things started going awry again. It turned out that the setting had been reset in the meanwhile, back to 0. I need to figure out how to set this setting permanently and globally.

I've upgraded Specify7 and when testing the taxon tree afterwards I did two things:

  • Increase the timeout value to 900 seconds = 15 minutes which ought to be enough to prevent these errors
  • Spend hours repairing the taxon tree for entomology which where generally preventing making changes for other disciplines

As a trial I merged "Poacea" with "Poaceae" which is time-consuming, but was successful.

Case therefore considered closed.
