Yes, I needed to unwrap in at least one place otherwise our use of ExpressionRenderer would throw an error cannot find interpreter.interpretAst

@wylieconlon This looks good to me, thanks for taking this on. Currently you are accessing both start and setup dependencies of data in our setup lifecycle hook which won't work anymore once we switch over. I created a stacked PR to simulate both setup and start here: wylieconlon#5 |

LGTM w/ possible tweaks. We have a few places where you have to know too much about an object in order to use it properly. (e.g. construct it, then call foo before calling bar, or bar will throw an exception). Such knowledge should be unnecessary if possible, and once constructed, an object should be usable.

I don't love this. If the renderer is required for this object to be used, it should be part of the constructor.

Maybe it's not possible due to the way our lifecycle methods work, but could plugins.data.expressions.ExpressionRenderer be passed into the embeddable factory's constructor?

@chrisdavies All your comments are referring to the same thing, and I also don't like it. We need the expression renderer component in the embeddable factory, but is only exposed by the data plugin in the The reason for this is that the expression renderer itself depends on the inspectors which are also only exposed in the So far we could just move everything into the start phase - but the embeddable factory registry is exposed during the setup phase and should receive all registers during that phase. The workaround applied here is to register the embeddable factory in setup and enrich it in start with necessary stuff. The only other workaround I can think of is to do it the other way around and save the reference to the embeddable factory registry during setup and initialize and register the lens factory in start - then the factory itself is clean because the renderer can be passed in in the constructor. The disadvantage is that we imply that the embeddable registry won't do anything to all registered embeddables before the start phase. If that's the case, the Lens factory won't be around which could lead to all sorts of bugs (Lens embeddables not showing up or something). That's why I opted for containing this workaround in the Lens code and have descriptive error messages thrown if an assumed pre-condition doesn't hold anymore. |

@chrisdavies As discussed offline, simplified lifecycle foo by moving embeddable registration into start phase. This required an additional change in the data plugin, the change also goes to master via #44903 cc @lizozom |
