I've tried installing this several times and the plugin does not work at all.

Could you please select Help> Toggle Developer Tools from the top menu to see if there is any error message in the console?

The only error is related to a different plugin: '[TimonVS.ReactSnippetsStandard]: Unknown language in contributes.ReactSnippetsStandard.language. Provided value: jsx'

Could you disable all other extension and try again?

Disabling the other extensions did not make a difference. About 50% of the time nothing happens - the other 50% I get the same behaviour as this issue.
