Biomechanical critters created by the High Druid in the Age of the Wizard King.
The Broken One cultivates their remnants and their resentments, aside from those lost to dwell in Living Dungeons.
The Vatborn are thought to have created the original caverns which dwarves settled in, accidentally freeing the beasts.
In the second age, they ruled the world, before the Imperial Legion rose to destroy them. The Alchemist who had controlled them was deposed in this age.
In the eight age, more than half of their scattered numbers were afflicted by fatal psycho-acoustic phenomena, and died together.
